I have not read the book you mention but then... I do not read much outside of my daily bible reading. I have written a blog called "original church" you may or may not find useful for helping your neighbors a little.
The blog does feature quite a few scriptures that help explain why the form of religion that today bears his name is not what he or the apostles seemed to endorse. When you think about it.. it was at the hands of the religious minded that our Lord was falsely convicted and crucified. It seems God had to show us in no uncertain terms that the nature of fallen man extends beyond his law and permeates everything in this world... including the many forms of religion man practices. If Jesus appeared today as he first did (instead of Power and Glory) I seriously believe he would be crucified by the Christian religious minded church. I thank God his true church is not built by the hands of man.
blessings to you in Christ Jesus as you walk in his light,
Greg

Huh, not at all what I expected from the post title. This is an important lesson you identify, though - a trap into which so many (myself included) fall. I think it's like on the airplane when they say 'put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others', because, well, you'll be very little use to anyone else if you don't take care of yourself along the way. So hard to find the line, though! When have you done "enough" when there's always something more to be done? How does one find peace amidst that... maybe "incompleteness" is the word? (those were mostly rhetorical, but maybe they can be fodder for a sermon some day)

We Jacob's Well preachers and worship leaders were having this same discussion today. The opposite side of the coin is that even when it is God doing it, not us, it is in some sense us. I mean in the most practical sense, when I go to the foodshelf to volunteer, "I" have to go. God doesn't raise my body of bed, shower, dress and feed me and transport my body to the foodshelf. For those trying to figure out what it means to rely on God and not themselves, to not try to work out their faith by doing things, but to dwell in God to be changed by God, they are still looking for something to change in them and in what they do.

What's the answer to this? Well... that's why we like being a church that is in search of the better question, not the illusory answer. There is no 'answer' to this, the quandary is real. My sense is that the real response to this dilemma is developing eyes that see beyond what is being done to who people are in God's eyes. Including oneself. It motivates us to do good works (biblical) but finds joy in them not because of their success, but because they give glimpses into the kingdom of God.

Hmmm... I think we need parables to tell this story. Not arguments that answer this question.
